Laundry Room/Central Utility

The Laundry Room is such an important part of our goals for the upstairs level in our upcoming renovation.

My many years of working in surgery introduced me to the concept of "Central Supply". It is an area designed to be highly organized and visually intuitive. Equipment and supplies related to certain functions, are all kept in one place, rather than spread across an OR. In this case, all of the items necessary to support our upstairs level would be located in one room, rather than dispersed throughout bathrooms, hall closets, and bedrooms.

It is safer too, in that I can lock one cabinet and know that all of the cleaning supplies are secure. I can tell anyone-- housekeeper, nanny, relatives, etc., to go to get what they need, or put things away in that room.

The room will contain, two washers and two dryers. It will have racks for hanging clothes on hangers as they come out of the dryer. Each family member will have a bin for folded clothes. Dirty clothes bins will be accessible to the kids and marked for types of loads.

There will be a wall of cabinetry to put all towels, sheets, extra linens, cleaning supplies, vacuums, and anything else that would support the upstairs. We did a wall of cabinetry like this in our previous home. Every cabinet was marked with bronze bin labels. It was a huge hit during our open house. The whole idea for such a large utility room stems from how my previous home's basement was set up.

The last thing on the wish list for this room would be a skylight. Since I purposefully put it in the center of the home so that the bedrooms would have the pretty views, it would be nice to have some natural light for the workspace.
